In fourth grade, students will expand on their knowledge on all subjects and draw more detailed and comprehensive connections between their learning experiences and the world around them, developing advanced skills in reading, math, and writing.

Reading

The students will read various forms of literature including fiction and nonfiction. They will continue to master fluency in oral and silent reading. Comprehension of the material will be challenged and assessed through vocabulary, responding to reading, projects, and class discussion. The students will learn and practice different phonetic sounds through activities that connect spelling with thinking, vocabulary, reading and writing. We will be using Secret Stories to help us in our understanding of phonics rules. The novels that the students will be reading include:

mATH

The students follow Sadlier Oxford Progress in Mathematics Curriculum and will receive instruction in and demonstrate the ability to perform addition with carrying and subtraction with borrowing, master 0-12 multiplication facts, multiply up to three digit problems, perform long division, solve story problems, master the metric system, and calculate fraction concepts.

The students will continue to learn and master the parts of speech with the help of Houghton Mifflin English Level 4 Curriculum. They will also work through the writing process in order to be able to write a proper five paragraph essay. The students will link grammar, usage, mechanics, and spelling to writing and speaking.

4th Grade Science follows the instruction of Houghton Mifflin California Science & MysteryScience and will have a focus on energy and motion, how humans use energy, earth’s features and natural hazards, the history of planet earth, and waveforms.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about their states history from beginning to current day. This class allows students to appreciate their state's history and culture.

The 4th Grade Bible curriculum, ACSI Purposeful Design: The Doctrines of Christianity, focuses on the basic doctrines of the Christian faith dwelling on the following facts: God tells His great story in the Bible, God’s Word is true, God loves everyone, and everyone needs to come to a saving faith in Jesus. We teach Christ-like behavior, evangelism, stewardship, apologetics, and all applications of spiritual growth.
