In the third grade, students apply critical thinking skills to all areas of the curriculum. A considerable goal for students at this grade level is to develop independence, as they assume increasing responsibility for monitoring their own progress and for learning.
Reading
The third grade reading program follows the Rooted in Reading curriculum and emphasizes independent reading skills. Students enhance their comprehension by developing strategies to read for literal and inferential meaning, while broadening their vocabularies. Through creative book reports, students gain a deeper understanding of the unique characteristics of a variety of genres. The novels that students will be reading are:
- Judy Moody In a Mood
- Clementine
- Sarah Plain and Tall
- 100 Dresses
- Frindle
- Lemonade Wars
- The Wild Robot
math
The math curriculum, Sadlier Oxford Progress in Mathematics, enhances students' higher-level thinking and understanding of real-life mathematical ideas, including number concepts, measurement, patterning, estimation, simple fractions, geometry, regrouping, and more. Third grade students work hard to master their multiplication and division facts. Practical application and problem solving are the ultimate goal.
writing
In writing, the curriculum, Houghton Mifflin English Level 3, helps students learn to develop clear and concise paragraphs and to write sequential, multi-paragraph essays. As students gain greater comfort with the writing process, they also hone their abilities to inform, persuade, and express ideas, while building upon their formal knowledge of grammar and mechanics.
science
The 3rd Grade Science curriculum, Houghton Mifflin California Science, brings on a unique and hands-on approach as they learn about ecosystems, heredity, fossils and organisms and environmental change, motion and stability, and weather. Third graders enjoy the opportunity to research and share additional information on the science topics we study by creating Google Slide presentations.
Social studies
3rd Grade Social Studies Curriculum, Houghton Mifflin California Social Studies, brings United States history to life with topics such as Native American history, European exploration and settlements, colonization, the Revolutionary War, the birth of an independent nation, immigration, and westward expansion, and our government. A simultaneous focus on age-appropriate current events encourages students to be aware of contemporary issues, as well as a focus on the United States geography and its relationship to the larger world
bible
In Bible, third graders follow the ACSI Purposeful Design: The Life of Christ and the Early Church Curriculum and focuses on basic doctrines of Christianity, such as the Trinity, salvation, sin nature, and eternity. Through hands-on activities, students discuss important topics such as the Holy Spirit and the return of Christ.
