Building on the student’s skills, the second grade program continues to focus on and emphasize a hands-on approach to learning, while moving students toward a more independent model. In second grade, students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning, to be problem-solvers, and to strengthen their ability to collaborate.

Family Heritage Project

Reading

Children in second grade are becoming more fluent readers, specifically with chapter books. They will follow the Rooted in Reading curriculum to learn to read and comprehend main ideas, retell what happened in a story including main ideas, details about characters, setting and events, self-select “just right” reading materials and make connections to text using their own background knowledge. The novels that students will be reading are:

  • Flat Stanley
  • Tornado
  • Chocolate Fever
  • The True Story of Balto: The Bravest Dog Ever
  • The Mouse and the Motorcycle
  • Charlotte’s Web
  • Stone Fox

Second Graders Dive into Biography Reading and Writing

BOOK REPORTS

math

Math develops the students’ higher-level thinking skills as well as the understanding of real-world mathematical concepts including measurement, patterns, estimation, time, money, charts, graphs, and simple fractions. Additionally there is a large focus on place value and regrouping with both addition and subtraction, setting students up for success in the upper grades.

Writing

In writing, the emphasis is on the importance of constructing a comprehensive paragraph with a topic sentence and supporting details. Students are introduced to multi-paragraph writing as well using transitional words and phrases. They develop book reports, creative stories, and research papers as well.

GRAMMAR
