As students transition from kindergarten to first grade, there is a new focus and emphasis on a hands-on approach to learning, while moving students toward a more independent model. In first grade, students are encouraged to be more independent learners, to be problem-solvers, and to strengthen their ability to collaborate.

Children in 1st grade learn to really channel their critical thinking skills while practicing reading. Our goal for reading is for the students to really grasp and understand what they are reading and to focus on details of the stories. Children will learn to understand the central message of a story, they will also learn how to describe characters, settings, and events.

math

1st Grade is a time when your child's math skills are in high gear. Students will learn to fluently add and subtract within 20, add and subtract within 100 and count to 120. They will also learn how to understand the concept of place value with numbers 1-99, measure and compare the lengths of objects, and tell and write time in hours and half-hours. Additionally, they will learn to organize, represent and interpret data, compose 2- and 3-dimensional shapes and determine defining attributes and non-defining attributes of shapes.

In writing,  there is an emphasis on writing opinions, facts, and narratives that include reason and details to tell stories. The student will learn how to edit and publish their writing, along with participating in shared research and writing projects.

Science

Science gives students a solid understanding of the scientific method and explores topics such as properties of matter, habitats and ecosystems, plant and animal life cycles, and forces in motion.

In Bible, students learn that God is the creator of all things. There is a focus on the Old Testemant and students will learn about key Bible stories and characters such as Adam & Eve, Noah and the building of the arch, and God's covenant to His world.
